The exact date of official closure is unknown. The airfield was listed as active in the 1997 Canada Flight Supplement. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the runway was still distinct and appeared maintained until around 2011. By 2016, the runway showed significant signs of being overgrown and reclaimed by the surrounding field. Therefore, the airport was likely closed and fell into disuse sometime between 2011 and 2016.
The airfield was a private aerodrome, listed with the operator name 'Connolly'. The closure was not the result of a specific incident, such as an accident or military conversion. The most likely reason is the cessation of use by its private owner. This is a common reason for the closure of small, private airstrips, which can occur if the owner sells the property, no longer operates an aircraft, or finds the maintenance and liability no longer practical.
The site of the former Connolly Airfield has been fully returned to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the land is now part of a larger cultivated farm field. While the faint, straight-line outline of the former north-south runway can still be discerned from the air, it is completely overgrown with grass and crops. There are no remaining airport infrastructure, such as hangars, windsock, or markings.
Connolly Airfield held local significance as a private general aviation facility. It was not a public airport and did not handle commercial traffic. Its primary purpose was to serve the aircraft of its owner, likely the Connolly family, for whom it was named. When active, it featured a single turf runway (oriented 16/34) approximately 2,600 feet long. Operations would have consisted of private recreational flights and potentially agricultural aviation (crop dusting), which is common in rural Alberta.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Connolly Airfield. As a decommissioned private strip on land that is now actively farmed, its reactivation is considered extremely unlikely. Re-establishing an aerodrome would require a new initiative from the current landowner and re-certification with Transport Canada.
