The airport was officially de-certified by Transport Canada and removed from the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) circa 2007. It had likely seen declining use for several years prior to its formal closure.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons. For a small municipality like the Village of Clinton, the high costs associated with maintenance, liability insurance, and meeting Transport Canada's certification standards for a low-traffic general aviation airfield were no longer sustainable. There is no evidence of a major accident or military conversion leading to the closure.
The site is no longer used for aviation. The former runway has been repurposed and is now home to the Clinton Raceways, a 1/4-mile drag racing strip operated by the Clinton Auto Club. While the runway's outline is still clearly visible from satellite imagery, its surface is now marked for motorsports and is not suitable or certified for aircraft operations.
Clinton Airfield was a registered aerodrome that served the community of Clinton and the surrounding Cariboo region of British Columbia. It primarily handled general aviation (GA) traffic, which included private aircraft, small charters, and potentially government services such as air ambulance (medevac) or wildfire suppression support. Its significance was local, providing a useful air link for a relatively remote community for several decades. The airfield consisted of a single gravel runway, approximately 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) in length.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Clinton Airfield. The economic factors that led to its closure likely still exist. Furthermore, its successful conversion into an active and established motorsports facility presents a significant physical, financial, and logistical barrier to re-certifying it as an airport with Transport Canada.
