Approximately late 1944 to early 1945. The airfield was almost certainly abandoned following the closure of the No. 39 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) at the main RCAF Station Oyen on November 17, 1944.
Military Decommissioning. The airfield was a Relief Landing Field (RLF) created for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) during World War II. As the war effort wound down and the pilot training program concluded, the vast network of auxiliary airfields across Canada became redundant. This site, along with thousands of others, was decommissioned and the land was typically sold and returned to its previous use, most often agriculture.
The site has been fully reclaimed for agricultural purposes. An examination of satellite imagery at the coordinates (51.49963, -110.41806) shows cultivated farmland. However, faint 'ghost' outlines of the former triangular runway layout are still visible from the air, a common remnant of abandoned WWII-era airfields where soil compaction from the runways affects crop growth differently. There are no remaining buildings, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure on the site.
The airfield was an integral part of the Allied war effort, serving as a Relief Landing Field for No. 39 Service Flying Training School. The main base, RCAF Station Oyen, was established in 1942 to train multi-engine pilots. To prevent congestion and provide safe areas for repetitive practice, several satellite fields were built. Student pilots from Commonwealth nations would have used this field extensively to practice circuits, landings, take-offs, and emergency procedures in training aircraft like the Avro Anson and Cessna Crane. While official records prominently list relief fields at Benton (R1) and Loverna (R2), this site's location and layout are consistent with a third, possibly less formally designated, training field from that era. The identifier 'CA-0826' is an unofficial code used in modern non-governmental databases to catalog such historical sites.
None. There are absolutely no plans or prospects for reopening this airfield. The land is privately owned and used for farming. The modern aviation needs of the Oyen area are fully served by the Oyen Municipal Airport (IATA: YOY, ICAO: CEM4), which itself is located on the grounds of the original, main RCAF Station Oyen base from WWII.
