Circa early 2000s. The airport was listed in the 2000 edition of the Canada Flight Supplement but was removed by the 2006 edition, indicating it was de-registered and ceased operations sometime between those years.
The specific reason is not publicly documented. However, as a small, private aerodrome located on agricultural land, its closure is consistent with common reasons for such facilities, including the owner's retirement, the sale of the property, or the land being fully converted for agricultural purposes, which is its current use. There is no evidence of closure due to a major accident or military conversion.
The site has been fully converted back to agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the faint outline of the former north-south runway, but the land is actively plowed and cultivated as part of the surrounding farm fields. There are no remaining hangars, markings, or any other aviation-related infrastructure on the site. The land is indistinguishable from adjacent farmland except for the subtle scar of the former runway visible from above.
Rutherford Airport was a registered private aerodrome primarily used for general aviation. It served local pilots and the property owner for recreational or personal business flying. According to aviation documents from when it was active, the airport featured a single north/south turf runway (18/36) with dimensions of approximately 2,640 feet by 100 feet. Notably, it was equipped with an Aircraft Radio Control of Aerodrome Lighting (ARCAL) system, which allowed pilots to activate the runway lights from the air, indicating it was a relatively well-equipped and maintained private strip capable of supporting night operations. Its significance was purely local, providing aviation access in a rural area of Southwestern Ontario.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Rutherford Airport. The land has been fully reintegrated into a working farm, and the aerodrome has been officially de-registered with Transport Canada for nearly two decades. Re-establishing an airport on the site would require significant investment and a new certification process, for which there is no current indication or demand.
