Circa 2009-2010. The aerodrome was officially listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) in 2006 but was removed from subsequent publications around the end of the decade. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a well-defined grass runway in 2008, which by 2013 had been plowed over and converted to farmland.
Economic reasons and change in land use. Waubuno was a private aerodrome ('Pvt'). Such airfields often close when the owner ceases aviation activities, sells the property, or finds the land more valuable for other purposes. The complete conversion of the runway and surrounding area into active agricultural fields indicates the closure was a deliberate decision by the landowner to repurpose the property.
The site is now private agricultural land and is unrecognizable as a former airport. The area that once constituted the runway has been fully integrated into the surrounding farmland and is actively cultivated with crops like corn or soybeans. There are no remaining buildings, hangars, or markings associated with the former aerodrome.
Waubuno Airport was a local general aviation aerodrome serving private pilots in the Brigden and greater St. Clair Township area. It was not a commercial or military facility. According to aviation records from when it was active, it featured a single turf runway designated 18/36 with a length of 2,600 feet (792 meters). Its operations were limited to small, private aircraft for recreational purposes, contributing to the local aviation community but having no wider national or historical significance.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Waubuno Airport. The land has been completely repurposed for agriculture for more than a decade. Re-establishing an aerodrome would require the current landowner to cease profitable farming operations and make a significant financial investment to re-grade the land and meet Transport Canada's requirements for a registered aerodrome, which is considered extremely unlikely.
