Approximately 1945. The airfield was a World War II relief field that ceased military operations with the closure of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan's No. 15 Service Flying Training School at RCAF Station Claresholm on March 29, 1945. While it may have seen some private use and was later registered as a private aerodrome (CA-0744), its primary operational life ended with the war. It has been officially listed as closed in aviation directories for many years.
Military Decommissioning. The airfield was closed because its function as a Relief Landing Ground for the nearby RCAF Station Claresholm was no longer required following the end of World War II and the termination of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). The land was subsequently returned to civilian use.
The site is now private agricultural land. The classic triangular runway layout from the WWII era is still clearly visible from satellite imagery, though the runways themselves are overgrown and exist as grass or dirt tracks within cultivated farm fields. There are no remaining airport buildings, hangars, or infrastructure on the site. The land is actively used for farming.
Woodhouse Airfield was originally RCAF Relief Landing Ground (RLG) Woodhouse. It served as a critical satellite field for No. 15 Service Flying Training School (SFTS), based at RCAF Station Claresholm during World War II. As part of the massive British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, its primary role was to provide a secondary, less congested location for trainee pilots to practice essential skills. Student pilots flying multi-engine trainers like the Avro Anson and Cessna Crane would use the field extensively for takeoffs, landings, and circuit procedures, which were vital components of their training before graduating and heading to active service.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Woodhouse Airfield. The land is privately owned and integrated into local agriculture. Its original aviation function is now served by the nearby Claresholm Industrial Airport (CEJ4), which was the former parent base (RCAF Station Claresholm) and remains an active aerodrome.
