Circa 2009-2010. The airport was officially closed and dismantled as part of the land acquisition and preparation for the Canadian Malartic Mine project. Major construction for the mine began around this time, necessitating the removal of all infrastructure in its path.
The airport was closed due to land expropriation for industrial development. Specifically, its location was directly in the path of the planned open-pit for the Canadian Malartic Mine, one of Canada's largest gold mines. The Osisko Mining Corporation (now Agnico Eagle and Yamana Gold) acquired the land, along with a southern portion of the town of Malartic itself, to develop the mine.
The original airport site no longer exists. The land where the runway and facilities were located has been completely excavated and is now part of the massive Canadian Malartic open-pit mine. The provided coordinates (48.1551, -78.1412) now fall directly within this large-scale mining operation.
Malartic Airport was a small general aviation aerodrome that served the local mining community of Malartic and the surrounding Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec. It featured a single gravel runway (Runway 08/26) approximately 3,000 feet (914 meters) in length. Its primary operations included handling private aircraft, charter flights supporting mineral exploration and mining personnel, government service flights, and providing a vital link for air ambulance (medevac) services in a relatively remote area. It was not a commercial airport with scheduled passenger service.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location, as the site has been physically eliminated. All air services for Malartic and the surrounding region have been permanently consolidated at the nearby Val-d'Or Airport (ICAO: CYVO), located approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) to the east. As part of the development agreement for the mine, the mining company invested in upgrading the facilities at Val-d'Or Airport to handle the increased and specialized traffic for the region.
