Approximately mid-2022
The helipad was closed due to the relocation of its primary and sole user, the CTV Calgary (CFCN-DT) television station. Bell Media, CTV's parent company, sold the Broadcast House property at 4515 Bow Trail SW in 2021. The station completed its move to a new downtown location in August 2022, rendering the helipad obsolete. The closure was driven by real estate and business consolidation, as the entire site was sold for redevelopment.
The site is currently undergoing a major transformation. The former CTV Broadcast House building has been vacated and is slated for demolition. The property was acquired by developer Minto Communities, which is redeveloping the site into a large-scale residential community called 'The Vistas'. The helipad structure no longer exists or will be removed as part of the building's demolition. The location is now an active construction and redevelopment zone.
The Calgary Broadcast House Helipad (CA-0633) was a private heliport located on the roof of the CTV Calgary building. For several decades, it served as the primary base of operations for the station's Electronic News Gathering (ENG) helicopter, often branded as 'CTV Skywatch' or similar. The helicopter provided live aerial coverage of breaking news, traffic reports, major events like the Calgary Stampede, and natural disasters such as the 2013 Southern Alberta floods. The helipad was a critical infrastructure asset that enabled rapid deployment of the news helicopter, giving the station a significant advantage in local news coverage and providing Calgarians with a unique aerial perspective on their city.
There are zero prospects for reopening this helipad. The aerodrome identifier CA-0633 has been permanently decommissioned for this location. The site's conversion from a commercial broadcast facility to a high-density residential community makes the operation of a helipad incompatible with the new land use.
