Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2004-2005. The aerodrome was listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) in June 2003 but was de-listed and noted as closed in subsequent publications by 2005.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. As a small, private airfield operated by a flying club, it likely faced economic pressures such as rising operational costs, insurance, and/or declining membership. The land was ultimately sold and repurposed for a more profitable commercial agricultural use, which now occupies the site.

Current Status

The airport site has been completely redeveloped. It is now the location of a large agricultural services facility operated by South West Ag Partners Inc. Massive grain elevators, storage silos, and commercial buildings have been constructed directly on the former runway intersection and surrounding airport grounds. The airport is non-existent, although faint outlines of the former grass runways can still be discerned in the surrounding fields via satellite imagery.

Historical Significance

Blenheim Airport was a private general aviation aerodrome that served as the home of the Blenheim Flying Club. It was a key local hub for recreational pilots and flight training in the Chatham-Kent region. The airport featured two turf/grass runways in a crosswind configuration: Runway 14/32 at 2,600 feet and Runway 05/23 at 2,000 feet. Its operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft typical of a flying club, such as Cessnas and Pipers. Its significance was not in large-scale transport but in fostering a local aviation community.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The permanent and extensive industrial infrastructure built on the land makes it physically impossible to restore aviation operations at this location. The general aviation needs of the area are met by the nearby Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport (CYCK).
