Circa mid-2010s. The aerodrome was officially delisted from Canadian aviation publications like the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) and Water Aerodrome Supplement (WAS) between 2012 and 2017. The exact date of delisting is not publicly recorded, but it ceased to be a registered aerodrome during this period.
Administrative redundancy and consolidation of services. The primary reason for the closure of CA-0614 was the existence of the official and better-equipped Wawa Water Aerodrome (TC LID: CJS5), located on the very same lake but adjacent to the main Wawa Airport (CYXZ). CA-0614 was the identifier for the historic floatplane base at the town's main waterfront dock. As aviation services became more centralized at the main airport, which offers fuel, maintenance, and other facilities, maintaining a separate registered aerodrome at the town dock became unnecessary. The closure was a regulatory cleanup rather than a result of an accident, economic failure of a specific operator, or military conversion.
The site is now a public, multi-use waterfront area. The coordinates point directly to the Wawa Government Dock and the adjacent Dr. Rose's Beach and Lion's Waterfront Park. The area is used for public recreation, swimming, and as a general-purpose boat launch and docking facility for local and visiting boaters. While a floatplane could legally land on the lake and potentially use the public dock for a short-term tie-up, there is no longer any dedicated aviation infrastructure (such as specific fuel services, hangars, or a dedicated operator's office) at this location. The site has been fully repurposed for community and recreational use.
The site of CA-0614 represents the original heart of Wawa's bush flying history. Before the construction of the Wawa Airport (CYXZ) in the 1960s, the downtown waterfront on Wawa Lake was the primary base for floatplanes. These aircraft were the lifeline for the region, providing essential transportation for mining exploration, forestry operations, supply runs to remote camps, and the burgeoning tourism industry (fly-in fishing and hunting lodges). For decades, this location served as a bustling hub for various air services, connecting the town to the vast Northern Ontario wilderness. It played a crucial role in the economic development and settlement of the surrounding area. After the main airport was built, the downtown base continued to see some use but gradually became secondary to the more modern facilities at the airport's own waterdrome.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening CA-0614 as a registered aerodrome. With the fully functional Wawa Water Aerodrome (CJS5) operating just a short distance away at the main airport, there is no operational or logistical need for a second registered waterdrome on the lake. All official floatplane traffic for Wawa is directed to CJS5. Therefore, the prospect of re-establishing CA-0614 is virtually zero.
