Approximately 2012-2013. The heliport ceased operations to allow for the redevelopment of the Alexandra Pier. The official dismantling took place as part of the construction project for the new cruise terminal.
Urban redevelopment. The heliport was closed and removed by the Montreal Port Authority to make way for a major infrastructure project: the complete overhaul of the Alexandra Pier and the construction of the new Grand Quay (Grand Quai) cruise terminal. The decision was based on a long-term strategic plan to enhance Montreal's capacity as a cruise destination and revitalize the waterfront, not on any failure of the heliport's operations.
The site has been completely transformed and is unrecognizable as a former heliport. The land is now occupied by the Grand Quay, a state-of-the-art cruise ship terminal that opened in 2017. The facility includes the terminal building, a large public green roof space called the 'Promenade d'Iberville', and the Port of Montreal Tower (Tour du Port de Montréal), a 65-meter-high observation tower that opened to the public in 2023. The area is now a major hub for cruise tourism and a popular public recreational space.
The facility was not a traditional fixed-wing airport but the Montreal / Old Port Heliport. Its significance stemmed from its prime, central location on the waterfront, providing direct access to downtown Montreal. It was the primary base for helicopter sightseeing tour companies (like Passport Hélico), offering tourists spectacular aerial views of the city, Mount Royal, and the St. Lawrence River. It also served as a convenient hub for corporate charters, media news gathering, and VIP transport, making it a visible and important part of Montreal's tourism and business infrastructure.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects to reopen a heliport at this specific location. The site has been permanently and extensively redeveloped for the Grand Quay cruise terminal and public spaces. Helicopter operations for the Montreal area are now primarily based at other airports, such as Montreal Saint-Hubert Longueuil Airport (CYHU).
