Circa early-to-mid 2010s. The airport was listed as active in the Canada Flight Supplement and other aviation directories until at least 2011, but was noted as permanently closed in databases by 2015. Satellite imagery from this period confirms the runways became overgrown and fell into disuse between 2013 and 2016.
No single official reason has been publicly documented. However, the closure is characteristic of many small, private aerodromes and flying clubs. The likely contributing factors include economic pressures, such as rising costs for maintenance and insurance, coupled with declining membership in the local flying club. The value of the land for agriculture, the primary industry in the region, likely made repurposing the site a more economically viable option for the landowner.
The airport is permanently closed and has been fully decommissioned. The land has been returned to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery clearly shows that the former runway areas have been plowed over and are now actively cultivated as part of the surrounding farm fields. While faint outlines of the former 'X' runway configuration may be visible from the air under certain conditions, the physical infrastructure of the airport no longer exists.
Vanscoy Airport was a private aerodrome operated by the Vanscoy Flying Club. It served as a local hub for general aviation for the community of Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, and the surrounding rural area. The airport featured two gravel runways (10/28 and 16/34), each approximately 2600 feet long, which were suitable for light aircraft such as Cessna 172s and Piper Cherokees. Its operations were focused on recreational flying, potential flight training, and providing a convenient base for local pilots, embodying the spirit of grassroots aviation on the Canadian prairies.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The complete conversion of the site back to productive farmland makes a return to aviation activities highly improbable and economically unfeasible.
