Circa 2015. The airport was reported as sold and permanently closed in late 2015 by members of the local aviation community. It was listed as an active private aerodrome in Canadian flight supplements and guides until at least 2012.
Economic and land-use change. The airport was a privately owned grass strip located on agricultural land. The closure occurred after the property was sold to a new owner who did not have an interest in aviation and subsequently converted the airfield back to full agricultural use.
The site is currently private agricultural land. High-resolution satellite imagery shows the faint, overgrown outline of the former east-west grass runway, but the area has been fully integrated into the surrounding farm fields and is actively cultivated. A building that likely served as a private hangar appears to remain on the property, but the site is definitively no longer an active or usable airfield.
Vankleek Hill Airport, also known locally as 'Barton's Field,' was a private general aviation aerodrome. Its significance was primarily local, serving as a base for its owner and other recreational pilots in the Eastern Ontario region. It featured a single 2,200-foot turf runway, oriented 09/27. The airport was a classic example of a private 'farm strip,' supporting personal and recreational flying for light, single-engine aircraft. It did not handle scheduled commercial, cargo, or military operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Vankleek Hill Airport. As the land is privately owned and has been fully repurposed for agriculture, a return to aviation operations is considered highly improbable.
