Circa 2000-2002. The heliport was delisted from official publications and permanently closed prior to the construction of the Production Way–University SkyTrain station, which officially opened to the public on August 31, 2002.
Urban redevelopment and land-use conversion. The site was acquired and repurposed for the construction of major public transit infrastructure as part of the SkyTrain's Millennium Line extension. The development of the Production Way–University station and its large bus loop made continued heliport operations at that specific location impossible due to space, safety, and air rights conflicts.
The exact site of the former heliport is now occupied by the Production Way–University SkyTrain station and its associated bus exchange. It is a major, high-traffic public transportation hub operated by TransLink, serving as a key transfer point for the SkyTrain's Millennium and Expo Lines and numerous bus routes. The Suncor Energy Burnaby Terminal remains operational on the adjacent property to the east of the station.
The Burnaby (Terminal) Heliport, which also used the more official Transport Canada identifier CBK9, was a private corporate facility. It was owned and operated by Petro-Canada (which later merged with Suncor Energy) to serve its adjacent Burnaby Products Terminal. The heliport's primary function was to facilitate rapid corporate transport for executives, specialized engineers, and time-sensitive parts between the terminal, downtown Vancouver heliports (like the Vancouver Harbour Heliport), other regional facilities, and potentially the Vancouver International Airport (CYVR). It was a logistical asset for one of Canada's largest energy companies, not a heliport for public use.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The land is now critical public transportation infrastructure, and its current use is incompatible with aviation operations. Re-establishing a heliport at this densely populated and developed location would be physically impossible and would not meet modern safety and regulatory standards.
