Unknown, but likely occurred between the late 2000s and mid-2010s. The airport is listed as 'closed' in aviation databases, and satellite imagery from this period shows a gradual transition to a state of disuse and lack of maintenance.
Primarily economic reasons. The airstrip was a private facility built to support oil and gas exploration and production in the remote Utikuma Lake oil field. Its closure is almost certainly linked to the completion of specific projects, a downturn in local drilling activity, or the establishment of more reliable all-weather road access, which rendered the airstrip obsolete and no longer cost-effective to maintain.
The site is abandoned. High-resolution satellite imagery shows a single, unpaved gravel runway that remains clearly visible but is unmaintained and being slowly reclaimed by vegetation. There is no infrastructure such as buildings, hangars, fuel storage, or lighting at the site. A small industrial facility, likely related to the oil and gas operations it once served, is visible just southeast of the runway. The airstrip itself is completely inactive.
The airport served as a private, unregistered aerodrome crucial for the development of natural resources in northern Alberta. Its primary purpose was to support the oil and gas industry, which saw significant activity in the Utikuma area starting in the 1960s. The airstrip facilitated the efficient transport of personnel, time-sensitive equipment, and supplies to remote well sites and exploration camps that were otherwise difficult to access. Operations would have typically involved STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capable aircraft, such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, DHC-2 Beaver, or smaller charter planes like the Cessna 206, which are well-suited for short, unpaved runways.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Given its remote location, lack of any supporting infrastructure, and the specific, now-obsolete purpose it served, reactivation is highly improbable. Any future industrial or resource activity in the immediate vicinity would likely rely on helicopter support or the existing ground transportation network.
