Circa 2010-2012. The airport was listed as active in the 2005 Canadian Flight Supplement. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the turf runway was intact in 2009 but had been plowed over and returned to agricultural use by 2012. The airport is now officially listed as permanently closed.
The airport was a private farm strip. The closure was most likely an economic decision by the landowner to cease private aviation operations and reclaim the land for its primary purpose of agriculture. This is strongly supported by satellite imagery showing the runway area being actively cultivated shortly after the estimated closure date. There is no evidence to suggest the closure was due to a specific accident, military conversion, or urban development.
The site of the former airport has been fully reclaimed for farming. Modern satellite imagery clearly shows that the land where the runway once existed is now an active, cultivated agricultural field, indistinguishable from the surrounding farmland. There are no visible remnants of the airstrip, hangars, or any other aviation-related infrastructure.
McClain Farm Airport was a private aerodrome located in Strathmore, Alberta, Canada. Note: The location is in Alberta, Canada, as indicated by the coordinates and the Canadian ICAO identifier prefix 'C', not Strathmore, California. According to aviation records from when it was active (c. 2005), it featured a single turf runway designated 16/34 with a length of 2,600 feet (792 meters). Its operations were characteristic of a private farm strip, primarily serving the personal, recreational, and potentially agricultural flying needs of the owner with light, single-engine aircraft. It did not handle commercial traffic and held no major historical or military significance, but was one of many such private airstrips that support Canada's general aviation community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening McClain Farm Airport. The aerodrome has been officially decommissioned for over a decade, and the physical land has been completely repurposed for agriculture. Re-establishing an airport on the site would require significant investment to recreate the runway and would necessitate a new and lengthy certification process with Transport Canada. The prospect of it reopening is considered virtually zero.
