The exact date is not officially recorded. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the airport fell into disuse and was permanently closed sometime between 2010 and 2014. By 2014, industrial activity is visible on the site, and by 2019, the runway is completely gone.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically the repurposing of the land for the energy sector. The area is rich in oil and gas resources, and the land occupied by the airstrip was redeveloped for resource extraction. Satellite imagery clearly shows that industrial infrastructure, such as well pads and access roads, was built directly over the former runway, making aviation operations impossible.
The site of the former airport is now an active industrial area for oil and gas operations. The physical runway no longer exists and has been completely overtaken by well sites, processing equipment, and service roads. The land is unrecognizable as a former airfield.
Sherman Meadows was a private aerodrome (Pvt) that served as a crucial logistical hub for resource industries, primarily oil, gas, and forestry, in a remote part of Alberta. According to the Canada Flight Supplement (circa 2006), it featured a single gravel runway (10/28) measuring 3000 feet long by 75 feet wide. It handled small, general aviation aircraft (e.g., Cessna, Piper, de Havilland Beaver) used to transport personnel, supplies, and light equipment to and from exploration and operation sites that had limited or difficult road access. It was not a public airport and had no scheduled passenger services.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Sherman Meadows Airport. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for industrial use, and the essential airport infrastructure has been destroyed. Re-establishing an aerodrome at this location would be logistically unfeasible and economically prohibitive.
