The exact date of closure is not officially documented. However, based on analysis of historical satellite imagery and the removal of the aerodrome from aviation publications, it is estimated to have been closed in the early to mid-2000s. The airstrip appears in a state of disuse in imagery from 2005 onwards.
The closure was primarily due to economic and logistical reasons. Maintaining a remote, private airstrip is costly. The operator, Pourvoirie Oasis du Gouin, likely found it more cost-effective and flexible to shift their transportation model. The outfitter now relies on floatplanes, which can land on the vast Réservoir Gouin directly adjacent to the lodge, and access via a long network of gravel forest roads. This shift eliminated the significant expense and liability associated with maintaining a private runway for land-based aircraft.
The site is an abandoned and unmaintained airstrip. Satellite imagery clearly shows the runway outline, but it is significantly overgrown with grass, weeds, and small shrubs. The runway surface is no longer serviceable for aircraft. The adjacent Pourvoirie Oasis lodge remains fully operational, but the airstrip itself is derelict and serves no function. There are no signs of aviation activity, and it is not used for storage or any other purpose.
The airport's significance was purely local and commercial. It served as a private aerodrome for the Pourvoirie Oasis du Gouin, a remote hunting and fishing outfitter. During its operational years, the airstrip was a vital transportation link, allowing clients and supplies to be flown in directly via small, private, and chartered general aviation aircraft (like Cessnas, Pipers, and other bush planes). This provided quick and convenient access to a location otherwise only reachable by a long boat trip or, more recently, a difficult drive. It was essential to the outfitter's business model before alternative access routes became more viable.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The current business model of the Pourvoirie Oasis du Gouin is well-established around floatplane and road access. The financial investment required to clear, restore, and potentially certify the runway to modern standards would be substantial and is unlikely to be undertaken, as the current transportation methods are effective and sufficient for their needs.
