Circa mid-2000s. While an exact date is not documented, the airport was officially de-listed from the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) and other official aviation publications during this period, indicating it was no longer registered or maintained for flight operations.
Primarily economic reasons. The airport was a small, gravel-strip aerodrome serving a very small community. Its closure was likely due to a combination of factors including high maintenance costs relative to its usage, low air traffic volume, and the proximity of the larger, better-equipped Fort Nelson Northern Rockies Regional Airport (CYYE), which is approximately a one-hour drive north via the Alaska Highway. The demand was insufficient to justify the operational costs.
The airport is abandoned and completely unusable for aviation. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the presence of the former runway, but it is heavily overgrown with grass, weeds, and small shrubs. There are no visible runway markings or airport facilities remaining. The site is derelict and is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
The airport, which was officially identified by the ICAO code CBA2 when active, was an important local asset for the community of Prophet River, British Columbia, and the Prophet River First Nation. Located adjacent to the Alaska Highway, it provided a crucial air link for a remote northern community. Operations consisted mainly of general aviation (private aircraft) and charter flights supporting regional industries like oil and gas exploration, forestry, and tourism. It also served as a potential landing site for air ambulance and other emergency services before road transport became more reliable.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Prophet River Airport. The significant cost required to clear, restore, and recertify the runway and the lack of sufficient demand make a reopening economically unfeasible. The transportation needs of the community are currently met by the Alaska Highway and the nearby Fort Nelson Airport.
