Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Circa late 1990s to early 2000s. The airport was depicted on aeronautical charts and listed in the Canada Flight Supplement through the mid-1990s but was noted as closed and removed from official publications by 2003.

Reason for Closure

Private land use change. Kencor Airport was a private airstrip located on a family ranch. The closure was a decision by the landowners, likely due to retirement from flying or as part of a plan to redevelop the property. It was not closed for economic, military, or safety-mandated reasons.

Current Status

The airport is permanently closed and has been completely dismantled. The land is now a private residential estate and ranch. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms that a large, modern home has been constructed directly on the northern half of the former runway's path. The southern portion of the runway has reverted to a grass field, and no trace of hangars or other aviation infrastructure remains.

Historical Significance

Kencor Airport was a private general aviation facility owned by the Copithorne family, a well-known ranching family in the Priddis area. The name 'Kencor' is understood to be a portmanteau of the owner's name, Ken Copithorne. The airport featured a single north/south turf runway, approximately 3,000 feet in length. It primarily handled light, single-engine aircraft (like Cessnas or Pipers) for the personal and business activities of the ranch. Its significance is local, serving as an example of the private airstrips that were once more common in rural Canada to support agriculture and ranching operations.

Reopening Prospects

None. The prospect of reopening the airport is zero. The land has been repurposed for residential use, and the construction of a permanent building directly on the former runway makes its use for aviation physically impossible without significant demolition and redevelopment, for which there are no plans.
