Approximately mid-2010s. The aerodrome was officially listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) as late as March 2013 but was removed from publications by 2018, indicating its official registration was cancelled during that period.
Private operational change and economic reasons. The airport was a registered private aerodrome operated by the 'Notikewin Cattle Co.' for its own use. The closure was not the result of a specific accident, military conversion, or public mandate. It was most likely delisted because the company ceased needing the airstrip, the property changed hands, or the owners decided it was no longer economically viable to maintain it as a registered aerodrome with Transport Canada.
The site is private property and remains part of a large agricultural operation, consistent with its past as a cattle ranch. Recent satellite imagery shows that the grass runway (oriented 11/29) is still clearly visible and appears to be mown and maintained. While it is no longer a registered aerodrome, it is possible the landowner uses it for private, unregistered farm-strip purposes. The surrounding area continues to be used for farming and ranching.
The airport's significance was entirely local and private. It was established to support the operations of the Notikewin Cattle Co., a large ranching enterprise in the remote landscape of northern Alberta. The 2,600-foot turf runway handled light general aviation aircraft, such as Cessna or Piper models, which were used to transport personnel, veterinarians, light cargo, and supplies to and from the ranch. It provided a vital transportation link for the private business, bypassing the long distances required for ground travel in the region. It was never a public airport and did not handle scheduled commercial flights.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Notikewin Airport as a registered public or private aerodrome. Any potential for reopening would be entirely at the discretion of the current landowner and dependent on their specific business or personal needs. Given its history as a private-use strip for a specific company, its reopening as a public facility is highly improbable.
