Henik Lake Airport

The airport was closed for economic reasons. It was a private airstrip built specifically to support mineral exploration activities in the remote Henik Lakes region. When the exploration project it served was suspended or concluded, the airstrip was no longer needed and was subsequently abandoned.

The site is completely abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals a single, unmaintained gravel runway that remains clearly visible against the tundra landscape. There are no standing buildings, hangars, or any other infrastructure on the site. The runway is deteriorating and is not suitable for aviation use.

Henik Lake Airport's significance was purely logistical. It served as a vital link for mining and exploration companies operating in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut. Its operations were dedicated to transporting personnel, geological samples, fuel, and supplies to and from a temporary exploration camp. The airport was not intended for public use and did not serve a permanent community. Its existence was entirely dependent on the active status of the nearby exploration project.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Henik Lake Airport. Given its remote location and original purpose, any future reopening would be entirely dependent on the initiation of a new, significant mineral exploration or mining operation in the immediate vicinity that would require the rebuilding of a private airstrip.
