Approximately early 2000s. The aerodrome was officially de-registered and removed from the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) around 2003-2004. It had ceased to be maintained prior to its official de-listing.
Operational obsolescence. The airport's primary purpose was to serve the nearby 'Foggy' forest fire lookout tower, operated by the Alberta Forest Service. With advancements in fire detection technology, including satellite monitoring and aerial patrols, many physical lookout towers were decommissioned. Once the Foggy Tower was no longer staffed or maintained, the associated airstrip became redundant and was subsequently abandoned and de-registered for economic and practical reasons.
The site is abandoned and unmaintained. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the presence of a clearing in the boreal forest that clearly outlines the former runway. The dirt/gravel strip is overgrown with grass and shrubs and is considered unusable for aviation purposes. There are no remaining structures, and the site is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding wilderness within the Caribou Mountains Wildland Provincial Park.
Foggy Tower Airport was a remote, private-use aerodrome crucial for the operation of the provincial fire surveillance network in northern Alberta. Its significance was purely logistical and local. It facilitated the transport of personnel, equipment, and supplies to the isolated Foggy Lookout Tower during the fire season. Operations typically involved rugged, STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capable bush planes, such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver or Cessna 180/185, which are workhorses of the Canadian north. The airport was part of a larger network of similar airstrips that enabled human oversight of vast, inaccessible forested areas before modern technology prevailed.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Foggy Tower Airport. Given its remote location, the reason for its original closure, and the lack of any industrial or commercial development in the immediate vicinity, there is no practical or economic incentive to restore and maintain the airstrip. Reopening would require a significant new purpose, such as a major resource exploration project, which is not currently anticipated for this protected wilderness area.
