Espanola (East) Airport

The airport was a small, private aerodrome. While the specific reason for its closure is not officially documented, it is highly probable that it was due to economic factors. Such small airfields often close when the owner can no longer afford the maintenance, insurance, and taxes, or when the land is sold for other purposes. There is no indication that it was closed due to a specific accident, environmental issue, or military conversion.

The airport is permanently closed and completely abandoned. The site has been reclaimed by nature. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the former runway area is now heavily overgrown with dense forest and mature trees, making the original airfield almost unrecognizable. The land appears to be unused and has reverted to its natural state.

Espanola (East) Airport was a registered private aerodrome that supported general aviation in the Espanola, Ontario region. It featured a single turf/grass runway (designated 09/27) approximately 2,200 feet in length. Its primary function was to serve local private pilots for recreational flying. It acted as a secondary, more rustic alternative to the larger, paved Espanola Municipal Airport (CYAR) located a few kilometers to the west. It did not handle commercial, scheduled, or military traffic; its significance was purely within the local private aviation community.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Re-establishing an airfield at this location would be prohibitively expensive, requiring extensive land clearing, grading, and re-certification. The aviation needs of the Espanola area are adequately served by the existing Espanola Municipal Airport (CYAR). The land is privately owned, and its current condition indicates no intention of resuming aviation operations.
