Circa late 1990s to early 2000s. An exact official closure date is not available, as it was a private airstrip. Its closure coincided with the shutdown of the logging camp it was built to serve.
Economic. The airport was a private facility exclusively supporting remote logging operations in the Clayoquot Sound region. It was abandoned after the primary logging company ceased operations in the immediate area, eliminating the need for an airstrip.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the location next to the Cypre River. The single runway's outline is still visible but is completely overgrown with grass, shrubs, and small trees. It is unmaintained and unusable for any fixed-wing aircraft. There is no remaining infrastructure, such as buildings or hangars, and the site is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding temperate rainforest.
Cypre River Airport was a private, unregistered gravel airstrip. Its primary and sole purpose was to serve as a logistical hub for the remote Cypre River logging camp, likely operated by forestry giant MacMillan Bloedel or its successors. Located in rugged, inaccessible terrain on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the airstrip was vital for transporting crew, flying in urgent parts and supplies, and providing a means for medical evacuation. It would have been frequented by classic Canadian bush planes, such as the de Havilland Beaver and Otter, and other aircraft with STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Cypre River Airport. The industrial need for the airstrip disappeared when the logging camp closed. Given its remote location, the lack of any nearby community, and the significant cost required to clear and restore the runway, its reactivation is considered economically and practically unfeasible.
