Calgary (Children's Hospital) Heliport

The heliport was closed as a direct result of the relocation of the hospital it served. The Alberta Children's Hospital moved from its original location on Richmond Road to a new, state-of-the-art facility adjacent to the Foothills Medical Centre. The closure was a planned decommissioning of the old site's infrastructure, not due to economic reasons, accidents, or military conversion.

The site of the former heliport no longer exists in its original form. The old Alberta Children's Hospital building was repurposed and is now the Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre. The land where the helipad was located has been redeveloped as part of the grounds and parking for this current health facility. The identifier CA-0073 appears to be an unofficial code used in some third-party databases to refer to this defunct heliport; it is not an official Transport Canada identifier.

This heliport was the dedicated air ambulance (MEDEVAC) facility for the original Alberta Children's Hospital. For many years, it was a vital piece of emergency medical infrastructure for Calgary and Southern Alberta, serving as the primary landing zone for helicopters transporting critically ill and injured children. Operations were primarily handled by STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) and other regional air ambulance providers. Its existence enabled rapid access to the specialized pediatric and neonatal intensive care units within the hospital, saving countless lives.

There are zero prospects for reopening this heliport. All pediatric air ambulance services are now directed to the modern, active heliport at the new Alberta Children's Hospital location. This service is consolidated at the Foothills Medical Centre Heliport (ICAO: CFF7), which serves the entire Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre campus, including the new Children's Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre, and Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
