Approximately 1993
Economic. The airport was a private airstrip built and operated exclusively to serve the Johnny Mountain Gold Mine. The mine ceased production in 1990, operated briefly again in 1993, and was then permanently closed and placed on care and maintenance due to low gold prices and high operating costs. With the closure of the mine, the airstrip's sole purpose was eliminated, and it was subsequently abandoned.
The airport is completely abandoned and unusable. Satellite imagery of the site shows the faint outline of the former runway, but it is heavily overgrown with shrubs and trees and is being reclaimed by the surrounding wilderness. There are no remaining airport facilities, and the strip is impassable. The adjacent Johnny Mountain Mine site is also abandoned, with some structures still standing in a state of decay.
Burrage Creek Airport was a critical piece of infrastructure for the remote, fly-in/fly-out Johnny Mountain Mine during its operational period from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. Located in the extremely rugged and inaccessible Iskut region of British Columbia's 'Golden Triangle', the airstrip was the primary means of transporting personnel, fresh food, and high-priority supplies. It was a challenging, unpaved gravel strip that required skilled pilots and Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) aircraft, such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, to operate safely in the mountainous terrain. It was the lifeline that made the mine's operation possible.
Nil. There are no current plans to reopen the Burrage Creek Airport. Its existence was tied directly to the Johnny Mountain Mine. Any future reopening would be entirely dependent on a new company deciding to reactivate the mine, which is considered highly unlikely in the near future. If a new project were to commence in the area, it is probable that a new airstrip would be constructed or that operations would rely solely on helicopter support.
very nice hard pack gravel about 4500ft and about 400ft wide
