The airport does not have an exact, publicly documented closure date. As a private aerodrome, its closure was a gradual process. Based on analysis of historical satellite imagery and aviation database updates, it ceased to be maintained and fell into disuse sometime in the mid-to-late 2010s. Unofficial aviation databases began listing it as 'permanently closed' during this period.
The closure was almost certainly for economic and practical reasons. The airstrip was privately owned and operated to serve the adjacent Pourvoirie Club Baskatong, a hunting and fishing lodge. The high cost of runway maintenance, insurance, and liability, combined with a likely decline in fly-in clientele, made its operation unsustainable for the lodge's owners. There is no evidence suggesting the closure was due to a specific accident, environmental concerns, or military conversion.
The physical runway, an approximately 2,500-foot unpaved strip, is still clearly visible at the coordinates. However, it is in a state of complete disrepair. Satellite imagery shows significant vegetation overgrowth and that the surface is used as a private access road or storage area for vehicles and equipment by the lodge. The site is definitively closed to all air traffic and is not safe or legal for any aviation operations.
The airport's significance was purely local and functional. It was built to provide direct air access for guests and owners to the remote Pourvoirie Club Baskatong on the Baskatong Reservoir. In its active years, it handled light general aviation aircraft (e.g., Cessna, Piper, de Havilland Beaver) whose pilots were visiting the lodge for recreational purposes like fishing and hunting. It served as a convenient transportation link, bypassing the need for long drives on rural or gravel roads.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Baskatong Lake Airport. Re-establishing the facility would require a substantial private investment to clear the land, regrade and resurface the runway, and meet modern Transport Canada safety and registration requirements. Given the economic factors that led to its initial closure, a reopening is considered highly improbable.
