Circa late 2017. The airport ceased all operations immediately following the destruction of the Sundance Guest Ranch in the Elephant Hill Wildfire of July-August 2017. It was officially removed from aviation publications in subsequent cycles.
The airport's closure was a direct result of a natural disaster. It was a private airstrip that existed solely to serve the Sundance Guest Ranch. In the summer of 2017, the catastrophic Elephant Hill Wildfire completely destroyed all buildings and infrastructure of the ranch. With its destination and purpose eliminated, the airport was rendered obsolete and was subsequently abandoned.
The airport is permanently closed and unmaintained. High-resolution satellite imagery of the location confirms the visible outline of the former runway, but it is now overgrown with vegetation. The site of the main ranch was cleared of debris following the fire, and the entire property was sold to new owners in 2021. The former airstrip is now simply a fallow strip of land on private property, with no remaining aviation infrastructure.
The Sundance Guest Ranch 'C' Airport was a registered private aerodrome whose primary function was to provide 'fly-in' access for visitors to the Sundance Guest Ranch, a popular dude ranch in British Columbia. It primarily handled general aviation traffic, such as small, privately-owned single-engine aircraft (e.g., Cessna, Piper). The airstrip, which had a turf and gravel runway approximately 2,600 feet long, was a key amenity that made the remote ranch easily accessible to pilots and tourists from across the region. This unique feature significantly enhanced the ranch's appeal and contributed to the local tourism economy by attracting a specific clientele.
There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The original business it served was destroyed and no longer exists. The new property owners have not announced any intentions to rebuild a guest ranch or re-establish an aviation facility. Given the complete lack of purpose and the costs associated with restoring and certifying an airstrip, the reopening of CA-0028 is considered highly improbable.
