Circa late 1990s to early 2000s. The exact date is not documented, but the aerodrome was delisted from official publications around this period.
Economic reasons. The airport was a private airstrip primarily serving a local air charter and outfitter service, Air-Melançon. The closure is believed to be directly linked to the cessation of this specific business operation. Factors likely included high operating and maintenance costs for a private facility, combined with improved road access to the region over time, which diminished the necessity for a dedicated local airstrip.
The airport is abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the location of a former north-south oriented gravel runway. The runway is now heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and small trees, rendering it completely unusable for any aviation activity. The land is privately owned, and some of the buildings that once supported the air service appear to have been converted into private cottages or residences.
The airport's significance was local, serving as a crucial piece of infrastructure for the region's tourism and resource-based economy. It operated as a private land-based aerodrome, often in conjunction with the adjacent Lac des Loups Seaplane Base (former identifier: CTL2). Its primary function was to support bush flying operations, transporting hunters, fishermen, and tourists to remote outfitting camps and lodges within the ZEC (Zone d'exploitation contrôlée) Pontiac and surrounding wilderness areas. The operations were typical of Canadian bush flying, likely utilizing aircraft such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver and Cessna 180/185 on wheels or skis.
There are no known plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening the Lac-des-Loups Airport. The runway is in a severe state of disrepair and would require substantial investment to clear, regrade, and potentially certify. Given the lack of any commercial or industrial driver for aviation at this specific site, it is considered permanently closed.
Hi im looking for the history of this airport
This is an abandoned former cold war military runway which is still in better shape than some places where I've had to pay landing fees. It's right by highway 117 if you need to be rescued.
