This airport was never officially opened or commissioned for public or international traffic. The large-scale development project it was built for encountered significant financial and legal difficulties around 2011-2014, which indefinitely halted plans for its certification and operation as an international airport.
The facility failed to open as planned due to the financial collapse of the original developer ('The Placencia Group') and the subsequent failure to secure the necessary government certifications, infrastructure for customs and immigration, and air traffic services required for an international airport. It was not a functioning airport that later closed; rather, it was a construction project that was never completed to operational status.
The physical runway remains fully intact and is clearly visible on satellite imagery at the specified coordinates. The site is now part of a different real estate development known as 'The Reserve Belize'. The airstrip is considered private property and is not certified or open for public aviation use. It does not appear on current official aeronautical charts as an active or public-use airport.
The airstrip was constructed between approximately 2007-2009 as the centerpiece of an ambitious luxury resort and residential development on the Placencia Peninsula. Its intended purpose was to be a private international airport with a runway over 8,000 feet long, capable of handling large private jets and international charters. This would have allowed high-net-worth residents and guests to fly directly to the resort, bypassing Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (MZBZ). Its history is significant as an example of a major, privately-funded infrastructure project in Belize that failed to be realized due to economic factors. It never handled scheduled commercial flights or received an official IATA code.
Prospects for the site opening as a public or international airport are extremely low. The Belizean government is focused on upgrading the nearby, officially recognized Placencia Airport (IATA: PLJ, ICAO: MZPL). For the Riversdale site to become operational, it would require immense investment in a terminal, security, fire and rescue services, and regulatory certification, which is unlikely. It could potentially be certified in the future as a private airstrip for domestic flights for the residents of 'The Reserve Belize', but there are no current, publicly known plans for this.
