Consejo Shores Airport

The closure was due to a combination of factors rather than a single event. The primary reasons include:
1) Economic Factors: The high cost of maintaining a private runway became prohibitive as its usage declined.
2) Decreased Demand: The airstrip was built to attract initial buyers to a remote area. As road infrastructure in Belize improved and the community became established, the necessity for a private airstrip diminished. A general decline in international travel by small, private aircraft also contributed.
3) Community Maturation: The airstrip's primary purpose as a marketing tool for a 'fly-in community' was no longer needed once the development was largely sold and populated.

The site of the former runway is still a clearly visible, unpaved strip of land within the Consejo Shores community. It is no longer maintained for aviation and is overgrown with grass and vegetation in many sections. The strip is now used by local residents as a large open green space for recreation, walking, dog walking, and as an informal access road for vehicles and golf carts within the development.

Consejo Shores Airport was an integral part of the Consejo Shores development, which began in the 1960s as one of Belize's first planned residential and retirement communities. The airstrip was a key amenity designed to attract foreign buyers, particularly from the United States and Canada, by offering the convenience of flying directly to their property. It exclusively handled General Aviation (GA) traffic, serving small, private aircraft (e.g., Cessnas, Pipers) owned by residents and prospective buyers. It was never a commercial airport with scheduled passenger service. The identifier BZ-0004 is a non-official ICAO code, likely from a government or military database, as private, unregistered airstrips often lack official codes.

There are no known plans or realistic prospects for reopening the airport. The community has been built up with numerous homes located in very close proximity to the former runway, which would make a revival for aviation purposes impractical due to modern safety regulations, liability, and noise concerns for the residents. The original justification for the airstrip no longer exists, and the nearby Corozal Airport (MZCZ) serves the region's domestic air travel needs.
