Approximately August 2013 (as a manned fighter aircraft base)
Military reorganization and strategic repurposing. The base was converted from a manned fighter jet base (flying MiG-29s) into the primary center for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operations for the Belarusian Air Force.
The site was not fully closed but was repurposed. It is now an active military facility known as the 927th Center for the Preparation and Use of Unmanned Aerial Systems. The base is the main hub for Belarus's military drone program, responsible for training personnel and operating UAVs. The airfield infrastructure, including the runway, remains maintained for these purposes.
Ros' Air Base was a key Soviet Air Force and later Belarusian Air Force installation during the Cold War and beyond. It was home to the 927th 'Königsberg Red Banner Order of Alexander Nevsky' Fighter Aviation Regiment. This regiment operated various fighter aircraft over its history, most notably the MiG-29 'Fulcrum' from the 1980s until 2013. The base played a crucial role in the air defense of the western USSR and subsequently Belarus, featuring a 2500-meter runway and numerous hardened aircraft shelters.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the base to its former role as a manned fighter base or for conversion to civilian use. Its current strategic importance as the national center for military UAVs makes its current mission the long-term plan for the site.
