Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

The airport ceased to be the primary airfield for Gaborone in 1984 following the opening of Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. It likely continued to serve general aviation traffic for a period but was permanently closed and dismantled for redevelopment in the late 1990s to early 2000s.

Reason for Closure

The closure was a direct result of two factors: 1) It was made redundant by the opening of the much larger and more modern Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKA) in 1984, which consolidated all air traffic. 2) The rapid urban expansion of Gaborone meant the land became highly valuable for real estate, leading to its rezoning and redevelopment for residential and commercial use.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an urban area. It is occupied by the residential neighborhood of 'Block 8' in Gaborone. No airport infrastructure, such as runways or hangars, remains. However, the faint diagonal path of the main runway can still be discerned on satellite imagery, cutting across the modern street grid as a ghost of its past.

Historical Significance

Gaborone Notwane Airport was the original airport for the capital city of Botswana. Before 1984, it handled all of Gaborone's air traffic, including government flights, small commercial services, and was a vital center for general aviation. It was the home of the Gaborone Flying Club and played a fundamental role in the nation's early aviation history post-independence.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been fully and irreversibly re-purposed for urban development. It is now a populated residential and commercial area, making any return to aviation use physically and economically impossible.
