Economic reasons tied to the closure of the associated resort. The airport was a private airstrip built and operated exclusively for the Cutlass Bay Club, a fly-in resort. When the resort ceased operations and was abandoned, the airport lost its sole purpose and source of funding for maintenance and operations, leading to its subsequent closure and decay.
The airport is completely abandoned and unusable.
