The airport was officially decommissioned and excluded from the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) registry on July 13, 2010. It was likely underused or inactive for a period leading up to this formal closure.
The closure was primarily due to economic and urban planning reasons. The municipality of Machado decided to repurpose the land for economic development. The low volume of air traffic made it more valuable as real estate for industrial expansion than as an active airfield. This strategic decision led to its decommissioning to make way for a new industrial park.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. The land is now occupied by the 'Distrito Industrial II de Machado' (Industrial District II of Machado). The former runway and airfield have been replaced by a grid of new streets and several large industrial and commercial buildings. In a nod to its past, one of the main roads in the new development is named 'Avenida do Aeroporto' (Airport Avenue).
Machado Airport, which held the official ICAO identifier SNMC, was a small aerodrome with an unpaved (dirt/earth) runway. It never handled scheduled commercial passenger flights. Its primary function was to support general aviation for the region. This included operations by private pilots, local business owners, and, significantly, agricultural aviation (avião agrícola) for crop dusting and other services vital to Machado's coffee-centric economy. Its historical importance was as a piece of local infrastructure supporting the primary industry of the region.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location, as the site has been permanently and fully converted into an industrial park. There are no known public plans or active discussions within the municipality to build a new airport elsewhere. Regional air travel needs are served by larger, established airports in the surrounding area, such as Varginha Airport (SBVG), located approximately 60 km away.
