Approximately late 2018 to early 2019. The airport was rendered obsolete and officially closed following the inauguration of the new Aeroporto Regional de Grajaú (ICAO: SNGJ) in December 2018.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment and safety. The airfield was located within the city's expanding urban area, with residential and commercial properties developing close to the runway, posing a significant risk to the population. The Brazilian government, as part of a regional aviation development plan, funded the construction of a new, modern, and more safely located airport to replace it.
The site of the former airport has been permanently decommissioned. The land has been repurposed by the local government for urban development. As of recent years, the area is being used for the construction of a large public housing project. While the faint outline of the former runway is still visible on satellite imagery, it is no longer intact and the area is an active construction site being integrated into the city's urban fabric.
For decades, this airfield, often referred to as 'Campo de Aviação de Grajaú', was the primary air link for the municipality. It was essential for connecting the remote interior city to the state capital, São Luís, and other regional hubs. Operations were dominated by general aviation, air taxi services (especially with smaller aircraft like the Cessna 208 Caravan), medical evacuation flights, and official government transport. It played a crucial role in the economic and social development of the region before the improvement of highway infrastructure.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. It has been permanently closed, and its replacement, the new Aeroporto Regional de Grajaú (SNGJ), is fully operational. All aviation activities and future development plans for the city are centered on the new facility.
