Approximately 2003-2004. The airport was officially deactivated and removed from aviation records in the early 2000s, with the land being sold for redevelopment shortly thereafter.
The primary reason for closure was economic and urban development. The airport was owned by the steel company Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), which decided to sell the valuable real estate for commercial and residential development. The city of Volta Redonda had grown around the airport, making its operations increasingly difficult and unsafe due to surrounding buildings and population density. The land's value for real estate far exceeded its value as an operational airfield.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. The land now hosts the 'Shopping Park Sul', a large shopping mall that opened in 2018, along with numerous residential buildings, commercial stores, and new roads. The original runway and airport facilities have been entirely demolished. The only remaining trace of its past is the name of the neighborhood, 'Aero Clube', which directly references the former flying club and airport.
The airport, whose last official ICAO code was likely SDVR (BR-2145 is a non-standard identifier), was intrinsically linked to the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN). It was built primarily to serve the logistical and executive transport needs of the steel giant, which founded and developed the city of Volta Redonda. Its main operations included:
- Corporate aviation for CSN executives and visitors.
- General aviation and air taxi services.
- Housing the 'Aero Clube de Volta Redonda' (Volta Redonda Flying Club), which was a center for pilot training, recreational flying, and parachuting in the region.
The airport never handled regular large-scale commercial passenger flights but was a vital piece of infrastructure for CSN's business operations and a hub for local aviation enthusiasts.
There are zero prospects for reopening the original airport, as the land is now a densely populated commercial and residential zone. However, there are recurring discussions and political proposals for the construction of a new regional airport to serve the Sul Fluminense region (including Volta Redonda, Barra Mansa, and Resende). These plans envision a new facility in a different, less urbanized location, but as of now, they remain speculative and have not progressed to a concrete project.
