The airport's registration was officially cancelled by Portaria (Ordinance) Nº 1533/SIA from Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) on May 15, 2018. The runway was likely unusable for some time before this official administrative action.
Administrative cancellation by the national aviation authority (ANAC). This is the standard procedure for private airfields that are no longer in use, fail to meet regulatory and maintenance requirements, or whose owners request de-registration. The closure was not due to a specific accident, military conversion, or broad economic event, but rather an operational or administrative decision by the property owner.
The airport is permanently closed and decommissioned. Analysis of recent satellite imagery shows the unpaved runway is no longer maintained, is significantly overgrown with vegetation, and is blending back into the surrounding farmland. The site is now used solely for agricultural purposes as part of the Fazenda Recanto.
Recanto Airport was a private aerodrome (aeródromo privado) located on and serving the Fazenda Recanto, a large agricultural ranch. Its primary function was to support the extensive agribusiness operations in a relatively remote part of the state of Mato Grosso. Operations were typical for farm airstrips in the region and included:
- Agricultural Aviation: Use by crop-duster aircraft for aerial application of fertilizers and pesticides.
- Private Transport: Facilitating the movement of the farm's owners, managers, employees, and essential supplies.
- General Aviation: Supporting the logistical needs of a large-scale agricultural enterprise far from urban centers.
It never served commercial or scheduled passenger traffic and was not open for public use.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Recanto Airport. As a private facility, any initiative to reactivate it would have to come from the current landowner. This would require a substantial investment to clear and restore the runway to safe, operational standards, as well as a new, complex, and costly registration process with Brazil's ANAC. Given its closure, it is highly unlikely to be reopened.
