Approximately late 1970s to early 1980s.
The primary reason for the airport's closure was urban encroachment and strategic government redevelopment. The land, which was on the outskirts of Cuiabá at the time, was selected as the site for the new Centro Político Administrativo (CPA) of the state of Mato Grosso. The private airstrip was closed and removed to make way for this massive public works project, which centralized the state's governmental functions.
The site of the former airport is now completely and unrecognizably redeveloped. It is occupied by the heart of Cuiabá's Centro Político Administrativo. Key structures on the former airport grounds include the Palácio Paiaguás (the Mato Grosso Governor's office), the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso, various state secretariats, the State Court of Justice, and other major governmental and public buildings. The area is crisscrossed by major avenues, such as Avenida Historiador Rubens de Mendonça, and features parks and extensive urban infrastructure. There is no remaining trace of the runway or any aviation facilities.
Chácara Córrego Fundo Airport was a small, private airstrip, likely with a grass or dirt runway. It served the general aviation needs of its owners and potentially other local pilots and business people. Its operations would have consisted of light, single-engine aircraft for personal transport and business travel. The airport's main historical significance lies in its status as a classic example of a private airfield being consumed by urban expansion. Its existence highlights the early aviation landscape of Cuiabá before the city grew dramatically, and its closure marks a key moment in the city's planned development with the creation of the CPA.
None. The prospect of reopening the airport is zero. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed into a high-density, high-value governmental and administrative center. It is physically impossible to reconstruct an airport on the site, which is now a vital part of the urban fabric of the state capital.
