Approximately between 2012 and 2014. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was clear and operational through 2012. By 2014, signs of disuse were apparent, and new roads and initial construction for a housing development had begun to cross and encroach upon the airfield.
Urban expansion and real estate development. The airport was closed to make way for the growth of a large residential area known as 'Setor Habitacional Mestre d'Armas'. The land, once on the outskirts of Planaltina, became highly valuable for housing as the city of Brasília expanded, leading to the airfield's expropriation and redevelopment.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a dense residential neighborhood. The entire area is now part of the Setor Habitacional Mestre d'Armas. All airport infrastructure, including the runway, taxiways, and hangars, has been demolished. The land is now occupied by houses, streets (such as Rua Piauí, which partially follows the old runway's path), schools, and local businesses. The physical airport no longer exists.
Locally known as Aeródromo de Planaltina, this was a significant private airfield for the general aviation community of the Brasília Federal District. It was a hub for recreational flying, flight training, and particularly for ultralight aircraft, being a key base for the 'Clube de Ultraleves de Brasília' (CUB). It provided a crucial, less congested alternative to the main Brasília International Airport (SBBR) for private pilots and enthusiasts. The airport never handled commercial passenger or cargo operations; its importance was purely within the realm of private and recreational aviation.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location. The land has been irrevocably converted to high-density residential use. There are no known official plans or proposals from government or private entities to build a replacement airfield in the immediate Planaltina area.
