Porto dos Gaúchos Airport

The primary reason for closure was obsolescence and replacement. The airstrip identified as BR-2119 was likely a rudimentary, unpaved, and possibly private field. A new, superior public airport, Aeroporto de Porto dos Gaúchos (ICAO: SWPG), was constructed nearby with a paved runway and official registration with Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). The opening of SWPG made the old airstrip redundant, leading to its abandonment.

Based on current satellite imagery of the coordinates (-11.5404, -57.3782), the site of the former airport is completely disused and has been reclaimed by nature and agriculture. The faint outline of the former runway is barely visible and is overgrown with grass and shrubs. The land appears to be integrated into the surrounding farmland, likely used as pasture. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure on the site.

As a pioneer-era airstrip, the field at these coordinates was likely vital for the initial settlement and economic development of the Porto dos Gaúchos region, a remote agricultural frontier in Mato Grosso. During its active period, it would have handled light aircraft for general aviation, serving local farmers (fazendeiros), providing air taxi and cargo services, and facilitating critical medical transport. Before the establishment of reliable road networks, such airstrips were the primary link for remote communities to larger urban centers.

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this specific airstrip. The aviation needs of Porto dos Gaúchos are fully met by the active and officially recognized Aeroporto de Porto dos Gaúchos (ICAO: SWPG), located a few kilometers to the west. Any future investment in local aviation infrastructure would be directed at maintaining or upgrading the existing SWPG airport, making the revival of the old, abandoned BR-2119 site economically and logistically unfeasible.
