Approximately mid-2012. The airport was officially replaced and ceased operations upon the inauguration of the new Aeroporto de Pedro Afonso (ICAO: SWPA) in June 2012.
Replacement and obsolescence. This airport was a basic, unpaved airstrip. It was permanently closed and replaced by a new, modern airport (ICAO: SWPA) constructed a few kilometers away. The new facility features a paved runway and superior infrastructure, making the old site redundant and obsolete for modern aviation needs.
The site is completely abandoned and decommissioned. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms that the former dirt runway is now an overgrown field. While the faint outline of the airstrip is still visible from the air, the land is unused, has no structures, and is being reclaimed by natural vegetation.
The old Pedro Afonso airport served as a fundamental 'campo de pouso' (landing strip) for the region. Its primary role was to support general aviation in a municipality heavily reliant on agribusiness. It handled small private aircraft, air taxis, and agricultural planes (crop dusters) essential for the local economy. It provided vital air connectivity for ranchers, farmers, and local business owners before the construction of a more capable, all-weather airport.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this defunct airstrip. All aviation services and future investments for Pedro Afonso are focused on the new, fully operational Aeroporto de Pedro Afonso (SWPA). The old site has been permanently superseded.
