The airport was officially and permanently closed on June 28, 2018. This was formalized by the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) through ordinance Portaria Nº 2053/SIA, which excluded the aerodrome (formerly ICAO: SWAP) from the national registry at the request of its operator.
The closure was due to economic reasons and the inability to meet regulatory standards. The operator, the Prefeitura Municipal de Arenápolis (Arenápolis Municipal Government), lacked the financial resources to perform the necessary maintenance and infrastructure investments required to comply with ANAC's safety regulations. Faced with mounting costs and non-compliance, the municipality formally requested the airport's deactivation.
The site of the former airport is being repurposed for urban development. Following the closure, the municipal government launched a project to create a new residential and commercial neighborhood on the land. The project, known as "Loteamento Cidade Nova," involves dividing the former runway and surrounding area into lots for housing and businesses. As of recent satellite imagery, the outline of the runway is still visible but is overgrown and unused for aviation, with the land being prepared for construction.
Arenápolis Airport was a key infrastructure asset for the local community, which is situated in the agricultural heartland of Mato Grosso state. It primarily served general aviation, including air taxi services connecting the town to larger centers and remote farms, and was crucial for agricultural aviation (avião agrícola) for crop spraying. The airport, with its single unpaved runway, provided essential connectivity for business, medical transport, and logistical support to the region's vital agribusiness sector before the significant improvement of road networks.
There are no prospects for reopening the airport. The site has been permanently decommissioned, and the land has been rezoned for urban expansion. The ongoing development of a new neighborhood makes any future aviation activity at this location impossible. There are no known public plans or discussions about constructing a new airport for Arenápolis at an alternative location.
