The airport was closed primarily due to urban expansion and real estate development. The city of Sapiranga grew around the airfield, leading to conflicts between aviation operations and the surrounding residential neighborhoods. The land became more valuable for urban development, and its prime location led to its sale and subsequent redevelopment, making continued airport operations untenable.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the city's urban fabric. A large portion of the land was transformed into a major municipal park called 'Parque do Imigrante' (Immigrant's Park), which is now a central venue for city-wide events, including the famous 'Festa das Rosas' (Festival of Roses). The remainder of the area consists of new residential streets, housing, and commercial properties. The site's aviation past is honored through the names of its new streets, such as Rua Alberto Santos Dumont, Rua ĂŤcaro, and Rua Zepelim.
The Aeroclube de Sapiranga, which operated under the correct ICAO code SSAP (the identifier BR-2086 is a non-standard, likely internal or outdated, reference), was a significant general aviation hub for the Vale do Sinos region for over 60 years. Founded in the 1940s, it was a crucial center for flight training, producing numerous private pilots. The airport was also very active in recreational aviation, particularly gliding (planadores), and hosted popular airshows and community events that fostered a local passion for aviation.
There are no prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and irrevocably repurposed for public and residential use. The construction of a major park and an entire neighborhood on the former grounds makes any return to aviation operations at this location impossible.
