The exact date of closure is not officially documented, but evidence suggests the airport fell into disuse and was de-registered from the national aviation system sometime between the mid-2000s and early 2010s. By 2018, municipal planning documents already referred to it as the 'antigo aeroporto' (old airport), confirming it had been inactive for a significant period.
The closure was primarily due to economic and regulatory factors. Like many small municipal airports in Brazil, Bom Jesus Airport likely ceased operations because of the high costs of maintenance for its grass runway, a lack of sustained demand for air services, and the financial and technical inability to comply with the increasingly strict safety and infrastructure standards set by Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
The airport is completely abandoned. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (-28.605654, -50.451363) shows the clear outline of the former grass runway (approximately 1000 meters long), but it is now overgrown with vegetation. The land appears to be used as an informal access road for vehicles traveling to and from adjacent agricultural fields. There are no remaining airport structures, such as hangars or a terminal building, on the site.
Bom Jesus Airport was a small but important airfield for the local community in the Serra Gaúcha region of Rio Grande do Sul. It primarily served general aviation, including private aircraft, air taxi services for local business owners and farmers, and agricultural aviation (crop dusting) vital to the region's economy. Before the improvement of local road infrastructure, the airport provided a crucial link for transportation, business, and emergency medical access for this relatively remote municipality.
There are currently no known plans, proposals, or public discussions regarding the reopening or reactivation of Bom Jesus Airport. The significant investment required to bring the runway and facilities up to modern ANAC certification standards, coupled with the national trend of consolidating air services at larger, better-equipped regional airports, makes the prospect of its reopening highly unlikely.
