The airport was officially de-registered and permanently excluded from the Brazilian national aviation registry on February 2, 2017. This action was formalized by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC) through ordinance PORTARIA Nº 300/SIA. The airstrip likely fell into disuse sometime before this official date.
The closure was a regulatory action by ANAC. The primary reason was the failure of the aerodrome's owner to update its registration to comply with new, more stringent federal regulations (such as RBAC 153) or a voluntary decision by the owner to no longer maintain the official registration due to cost, lack of necessity, or liability. The closure was part of a nationwide effort by ANAC to remove non-compliant or abandoned private airfields from the official registry. It was not closed due to a specific accident, environmental issue, or military conversion.
The physical site of the airport still exists. Satellite imagery shows the unpaved runway is still clearly visible and largely unobstructed, although it shows signs of disuse, such as vegetation growth and a lack of maintenance. The land remains an integral part of the Fazenda Campanário, which continues to operate as a major cattle ranch and ecotourism destination. The airstrip itself is officially closed and is not used for any registered aviation activity. It may be used for farm vehicle traffic or is otherwise completely abandoned.
Fazenda Campanário Airport (formerly registered with the ICAO-style identifier SJOK) was a private airfield whose significance was entirely local. Its purpose was to serve the logistical needs of the Fazenda Campanário, a large and prominent cattle ranch and ecotourism/sport fishing lodge located in a relatively remote part of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, near the Pantanal and Serra da Bodoquena National Park. When active, it handled private general aviation flights, primarily for transporting the farm's owners, high-value guests, personnel, veterinarians, and urgent supplies. Operations would have consisted of small single-engine piston or turboprop aircraft (e.g., Cessna 206, Piper Seneca, Pilatus PC-12) capable of using a short, unpaved runway.
There are no known public plans or prospects for reopening the airport. For it to become operational again, the owner would need to initiate a completely new and rigorous certification process with ANAC, which is both costly and complex. Given that the registration was allowed to lapse, it is highly unlikely that there is an economic or operational incentive for the owners to pursue re-certification. Therefore, the prospect of reopening is considered minimal to non-existent.
