Approximately between 2012 and 2014. The airport was officially removed from aeronautical records and the land was repurposed during this period.
Economic reasons and urban expansion. The city of Coroatá grew around the airport, significantly increasing the value of the land. The municipal government opted to deactivate the low-traffic airfield and sell the land for a more profitable purpose: real estate development.
The airport no longer exists. The entire site, including the unpaved runway and any support structures, was demolished and completely redeveloped into a residential housing development (a 'loteamento' in Portuguese). Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the area is now a grid of streets and houses, fully integrated into the urban fabric of Coroatá.
The airport, which operated under the ICAO code SNCW, was a crucial piece of regional infrastructure for Coroatá in the mid-to-late 20th century. It primarily served general aviation, air taxi services, and private aircraft. Before the improvement and paving of regional highways like the BR-135, the airport provided a vital and fast connection for business travel, political transport, and critical aeromedical flights to the state capital, São Luís. It was essential for connecting the municipality to the rest of the state when ground travel was slow and difficult.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Reopening at the original site is impossible as it is now a residential neighborhood. The construction of a new airport elsewhere is considered highly unlikely due to the high cost of construction and certification, combined with the reduced demand for air travel from the city since the improvement of road networks to the state capital.
