Approximately 2010-2011. The airport was officially reported as being deactivated for 'more than 10 years' prior to the inauguration of its replacement in December 2021.
The airport was closed due to a lack of operational safety. The unpaved, dirt runway had severely deteriorated over time due to erosion and lack of maintenance, making takeoffs and landings hazardous. This rendered the airstrip non-compliant with minimum safety standards set by aviation authorities.
The site of the former airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly defined but heavily overgrown runway strip. The land is being reclaimed by vegetation, and the expansion of the town of Gurupá is encroaching on its boundaries. The site is unusable for any aviation activity and has no remaining infrastructure.
As the original airstrip for the municipality, Gurupá Airport was a critical piece of infrastructure for a remote Amazonian town primarily accessible by river. It served as a vital link for general aviation, handling small propeller aircraft (e.g., Cessna 208, Piper Seneca). Its operations were essential for aeromedical evacuations (air ambulance services), the transport of essential goods, government personnel, and private charter flights, connecting Gurupá to regional hubs like Belém and Macapá.
There are zero prospects for reopening this specific airport. It has been permanently and officially replaced by the new Gurupá Airport (ICAO: SNGU), which was constructed and inaugurated in December 2021. The new airport is located approximately 2 kilometers northwest of the old site and features a modern, paved runway and superior facilities. All aviation development and investment for the region are now focused on the new SNGU airport.
