The airport did not have a single, formal closure date but rather fell into disuse gradually. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates it was still somewhat defined in the early 2000s but showed significant deterioration and overgrowth by the late 2000s. By the early 2010s (circa 2012-2014), it was effectively unusable and urban development had begun to encroach on the area, making its closure permanent.
The closure was primarily due to a combination of economic factors and urban expansion. Like many small municipal airstrips in Brazil, it likely became economically non-viable to maintain, failing to meet the increasingly stringent operational and safety standards set by Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). As the airstrip fell into disrepair and was abandoned, the city of Guimarães grew around and eventually over the site, making its reactivation impossible. There is no evidence of a specific accident or military conversion leading to the closure.
The site of the former airport has been completely absorbed by the urban expansion of Guimarães. The land where the runway once existed is now a residential neighborhood. Satellite imagery clearly shows houses, buildings, and a network of streets built directly over and across the former airstrip's footprint. Streets in the area bear names that reference the old airport, such as 'Rua do Aeroporto' and 'Travessa do Aeroporto', which is a common practice in Brazil. There is no remaining trace of airport infrastructure.
Guimarães Airport was a small, local municipal airstrip with an unpaved (dirt/gravel) runway. Its primary role was to support general aviation and air taxi services. In a region with historically challenging road transport, the airstrip was a vital link for connecting Guimarães to the state capital, São Luís, and other regional centers. It would have been used by small propeller aircraft (such as Cessna or Piper models) for transporting passengers, cargo, mail, and, crucially, for medical evacuation (aeromédico) flights. Its significance was not national but was critical for the local community's connectivity and emergency response capabilities before its decline.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location, as the site is now a fully developed residential area. There are no known or published plans by the municipal or state government to construct a new airport for Guimarães. Any future air service for the municipality would require acquiring new land and building a new facility from scratch, for which there is currently no active project.
